The oldest provincial rugby competition in Australia is set to kick off this weekend and with the Waratahs having the bye in Harvey Norman Super Rugby AU, a host of stars are set to line up for their club sides in the Charter Hall Shute Shield.

Tane Edmed who had a breakout year in 2020 leading Eastwood to the Grand Final in his debut Shute Shield season, returns to his club this weekend after impressing off the bench for the Waratahs in 2021.

Edmed’s Eastwood face the Western Sydney Two Blues at T.G Milner and the talented flyhalf is looking forward to being back in his club jersey and playing alongside Waratahs teammate Mark Nawaqanitawase.

“I’m always keen to get back to the Woods, it’s a great club.” Edmed said.

“One thing I want to tick off the bucket list is to win the Shute Shield, especially after last year falling one game short. I think we have the team to go that far again.

“Marky will be asking for plenty of high balls, like he always does.  It’s awesome having him in the club environment because his athletic ability is crazy”

Randwick has benefitted most from the Waratahs bye week with Michael Wood, Mitch Short, Kristian Jensen and Ben Donaldson all named in their side to face West Harbour at Drummoyne Oval.  Ben Donaldson will play his first match of the season, after missing the first seven rounds of Harvey Norman Super Rugby AU through injury.

Henry Robertson is another player who could see a lot club action in the coming weeks, with Jake Gordon’s return from injury set to limit the backup scrum halves time in the Waratahs match day 23. Robertson will start for Sydney Uni at scrumhalf alongside Waratahs teammate Darcy Breen against Newcastle at home.

Charlie Gamble, fresh off making his Waratahs debut last week against the Brumbies, will line up with Jack Grant for Eastern Suburbs when they take on Waratahs team mate Joe Cotton and Southern Districts at Woollahra Oval.

In a first for the Charter Hall Shute Shield every match will be available to watch live on Stan Sport, giving fans the opportunity to watch the entire season from the comfort of their homes.
