Sydney Rugby Union (SRU) has today announced the fixtures for all eighteen rounds of the 2024 Charter Hall Shute Shield season, with the competition officially kicking off on Saturday 6 April.
The 2024 season will begin with a host of blockbuster matchups, including a clash between heavyweights Northern Suburbs and Sydney University, whilst the Woodies host the Marlins in a Quarter Final replay from last season.
Round One will also see the defending champions Randwick travel north to face one of the Shute Shield’s most improved outfits, the Hunter Wildfires. After featuring in their first Quarter Final in 2023, the Wildfires will be eager to earn an early scalp against the Wicks, a team they defeated 31-24 in their only clash last season.
The first five rounds are heavy on traditional and emerging rivalries, Easts against Gordon (Round Two), Randwick against Easts (Round Four) and Sydney University against Warringah (Round Five).
Round Two also features a visit to regional NSW, with Northern Suburbs set to host Eastwood in Cowra.
“The countdown is well and truly underway for the 2024 Charter Hall Shute Shield season, and today’s announcement will only heighten the excitement throughout our competition,” said SRU General Manager Peter Watkins.
“After another competitive and entertaining season in 2023, each club is working hard to ensure the competition is set for launch on 6 April.
“The Charter Hall Shute Shield is an incredibly proud and historic rugby competition, and we look forward to seeing all the rugby community and fans enjoying the action in 2024.
With all twelve teams playing eighteen matches throughout the season, the clubs will enjoy a bye weekend following Round Nine before the run to the finals series begins on 15 June.
As is customary, the run to finals will again be all-important, especially for clubs that have teetered on the precipice of a Finals position over recent years.
After narrowly missing out on a 2023 Finals birth, the Two Blues will face Warringah, Southern Districts and Gordon in the final three fixtures of the season, matches which will no doubt have a bearing on their Finals credentials.
At the opposing end of the spectrum, traditional Finals contenders in Sydney University will be aiming for a return to the Shute Shield’s final month, having not featured in the 2023 Finals series. The Students will face Manly, Easts and Eastwood in their final three rounds as they begin their quest for their thirteenth Shute Shield premiership since 2000.
Blockbuster fixtures between Manly and Norths (Round Eighteen), West Harbour against Warringah (Round Seventeen) and Eastwood against Easts (Round Sixteen) round out the competition and could be integral in shaping the top four.
